  • Hey! Actual trans person. I want to start by saying please use Transgender, not transexual. It’s a dysphoria around gender and the outdated transexual term ties it to sexuality. In reality, those are very different, even if they may be closely associated in general thought.

Some of what you are describing you did when you were younger was exploring your gender. I personally think that’s great, and I think everyone should at least ask themselves how they feel about their identity and try things out if they find themselves curious. Like you, they might not find that they are trans and that’s ok! That actually happens a lot, though most cis folks don’t tend to question or think about their gender much.

As for me, when I was a kid, I just felt wrong whenever I was strongly gendered as male. I felt how you feel about your masculinity when I could get away with feminine choices. The Internet was an escape where I could be anonymous and I clung to it since it let me be more myself. If you’d like to learn more or learn signs that you or others might be experiencing gender dysphoria, I highly recommend https://genderdysphoria.fyi.

  • Here’s a good resource: http://genderdysphoria.fyi/

You need to understand how often people ask questions that seem to come from a place of ignorance but genuine curiosity and then take that discussion to tell trans folks that they are wrong. It happens so much that it’s the main way that transphobes try to infiltrate spaces meant for trans folks.

My honest response is to check that website out. If you are asking about this in trans spaces, bring zero opinions to the table and accept what is said back to you without debate. Debating trans folks’ existence is something that is forced upon them in their own spaces by malicious people asking and framing questions just like you’ve described.

It’s hard to take the “enlightened centrism” stance seriously when I see it used as an excuse. So many centrists tell trans folks that their identity is wrong and that they are mentally ill or chose this “lifestyle”. As if they want to be trans. As if they like feeling scared and being told they’re wrong about something as fundamental as their identity.

They said they supported gays and are saying the new flag is divisive, despite it being more inclusive. The rainbow flag was not really representative for everyone, as it was predominately associated with gay men and lesbians, and was updated to try and include others in the LGBTQIA+ community that weren’t getting enough (or any!) representation. I’m calling out their signalling that they are an ally while they also claim that one of the problems with the community is that it is somehow more divisive, despite being more accepting and broader than ever before.

I find that being gatekept would mean that I don’t allow someone to be part of the community, and in a way I did do that. I’ll admit that part of my response was rude and probably uncalled for. This whole comment section is full of apologists for the confederate flag, and in my first reading I might have taken their intent more harshly than they meant. I’m sorry about that. I did not mean to gatekeep and in the future I’ll be more careful to not rebuke those who seem to mean well, even if I am hurt or concerned by what they said.

I still feel that focusing on the updated flag and how it may be seen as divisive is not very productive or helpful to the overall community, and overall the LGBTQIA+ community fights fascism at every turn. Having these tough conversations about marginalized groups and how they can be better represented is what helped spur the community to adopt the updated flags, regardless of opinions on it. Because, at the end of the day, it is a bunch of smaller groups banding together to protect one another. Flying the rainbow flag, progress, or updated progress w/ intersex are all valid ways to show support and raise awareness. I feel that way even in regards to flags representing smaller subsets, such as the lesbian, trans, or asexual flags.

I’ll take “Tell me you were never actually an ally without telling me you were never an ally” for $100 Alex.

The flag was updated to include more folks who are oppressed as a minority. Anyone who is a target due to things like their sexuality, gender, disabilities, skin color, or other inherent traits belongs in it. The whole point is to band together because the groups in it are small and vulnerable. The fact that the updated flag bothers you and you’re willing to complain about it really speaks volumes to how much and why it matters to you.

  • I guess we read the last paragraph differently, I read “inclusivity and celebrating diversity is equivalent to violent oppression and punishing diversity”, let alone that the rest of the content softens the reality that the Confederacy was all about slavery and white supremacy as a race.

Anyway, I’m not listening to myself very well here. Not here to debate white supremacists, bigots, or fascists. Fuck off and eat shit.

  • I didn’t realize I was responding to you and not some other anonymous racist apologist, that’s all. And it’s clear what you are by the fact that you’re calling the first comment based despite that it’s trying to separate the Confederacy’s flag from the reality that they SECEDED AND WENT TO WAR OVER WANTING TO KEEP BLACK FOLKS AS SLAVES and their flag represents that.

“I know the ‘cunts kicking puppies for four years over a century ago before getting shitheeled into the dirt’ is an unpopular group, but can’t we see their side of things? Clearly their flag means freedom from oppression!”

Go back to Twitter with your other white supremacist friends.

Independence from what exactly? Hm? What things did they feel they were being oppressed over? Got a list?

I doubt you have it on hand, so I looked over the secession documents and speeches from Confederates etc. Here’s an exhaustive list of things they wanted to keep that were being “taken from them”:

    • Slavery
