  • Here to rep the ceramic gang. Perhaps not as long lasting as cast iron, but I still have my first ceramic pan from 6? 7? years ago. Still as good as the day I got it. If you like non-stick and don’t want to deal with maintinence or fear of fucking up a cast iron, ceramic is an excellent alternative with plenty of longevity.

The only consideration for care needed is just to hand wash it over putting it in the dishwasher. Which you should already be doing for nonstick. People say you can use metal utensils on ceramic but I’ve never tested that

  • Chiming in to say if you’re in the market for a car (new or used) consumer reports is an indispensable resource, well worth the subscription price. I just cancel after I’ve bought a car. They have a catalogue going back decades and keep info on older cars up to date with longevity stats and common problems.

Car forums are a huge help too. Name a car and there’s a group of people who have made it their life’s work to provide quality information on maintinence, repairs and minute quirks about it.

Also, just buy a Toyota Corolla if you want “an car” that won’t shit the bed on you.

Source: I’m broke and have to buy cheap cars from shady used car lots or troll Facebook marketplace

  • Look at my comment thread. I have a guy calling me a woke tankie for a simple disagreement. The shit slinging is already present in and among lemmy.world users. Having (potentially) more shit slinging is not going to change much. I’ve browsed hexbear a handful of times and was looking forward to their federation. By and large, conversation on there is pleasant to neutral. It’s a bit cringe at times and occasionally hostile to non-leftists. You see the same from the right and centrists as well. That’s just how online political discourse goes. If anything, I’d say the online right is a lot more hostile, bigoted and prone to harassment than the left. But I could be biased.

The way I see it, the admins are basically saying that political arguments are fine among our users and those from other instances, just not hexbear and lemmygrad. Which is pretty silly and a tad dramatic

  • Gotta say, pre-emptive defederation seems like a bit of an over reaction. There’s plenty of leftists in other instances, not just hexbear and lemmygrad. Hell, I’m an anarchist that regularly comments on political/social threads in this instance, it doesn’t seem to be an issue. Lemmy in general is pretty obviously far left leaning. I don’t see the harm in federating with hexbear, unless they show themselves to be actively harassing or trolling. But you’d have to federate first to find out if they will

  • Kinda sounds like they’re describing GHB in the article, which leaves most people without a hangover and has often been described as “getting drunk without alcohol”.

Sythehol sounds like a neat concept but I personally don’t think it’ll happen. Even if we find a drug that produces all of the effects of ethanol without the long term health effects, hangovers and can be easily “undone” a la narcan for opioids, I don’t think it would take off. And that’s all of those prerequisites are a pretty monumental undertaking. If you enjoy quality bottles of rum, tequila, whiskey, gin, etc. a big part of its flavor is due to ethanol. It’s a great solvent and all of those flavors from the mash are dissolved in the ethanol. If it’s an aged spirit like a quality scotch or bourbon, the ethanol is pulling those wood sugars and volatile compounds from the barrel, giving it it’s characteristic flavors. And those compounds break down over years, forming new flavors, adding texture and mellowing out the ethanol “burn”. There’s no replacement for that. People have tried rapid aging in all sorts of novel ways or adding flavors to the finished product. They produce subpar spirits.

Part of drinking is the effects but for a lot of people it’s the unique flavors that can’t really be found otherwise, particularly in fine wine/spirits or craft cocktails. It’s an experience in and of itself, outside of simple intoxication
